An exercise in tone: Roughly draw a circle, about the size of a 2p coin – you could even draw around a coin. Fill in the circle, making it as dark as possible; you can do this by layering up criss-crossing lines and leaning more heavily on your pencil. Next to that, draw another circle of the same size and fill this one in too, but make it less dark (fewer lines, and less pressure on the pencil). Draw a third circle and make it less dark again. Keep going until you have a string or chain of circles leading form black to white.
